Using Preventative Measures to Stay Healthy

The Randolph County Health Department would like to remind you that it is important to use preventative measures to stay healthy and avoid illness from Swine Flu. There are many things that can be done to prevent Swine Flu and keep it from spreading. It is important to remember to take care of yourself not only to keep yourself safe, but also protect your family and friends.

Botulism Poisoning From Contaminated Canned Food Products

This Health Advisory describes the risk of exposure to botulinum toxin from canned food products (and dog food) produced by Castleberry's Food Company of Augusta, Ga. Botulism is a neuroparalytic illness caused by neurotoxins produced by the spore−forming bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

Early Report of Serious Eye Infections Associated With Soft Contact Lens Solution

CDC has received reports of 138 cases of culture-confirmed Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) in 35 states (including Missouri) and Puerto Rico, with complete patient data available for 46 case-patients.

State Health Department Releases Health Advisory Urging Missourians Not to Keep Monkeys as Pets

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) today released a general Health Advisory on the risks of owning monkeys and other non-human primates. The department strongly discourages Missourians from keeping primates as pets.

Increase in Childhood Tip Over Deaths
September 27, 2006
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is issuing a warning today about the dangers of televisions and heavy furniture tipping over and killing young children. The number of TV tip-over deaths reported to CPSC during the first seven months of 2006 is twice the typical yearly average.

Increase in Animal Rabies Cases Prompts Statewide Public Health Advisory
September 19, 2006
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) this week released a public health advisory for rabies in Missouri. An unusually high percentage of rabid animals have been detected so far this year in Missouri, including three domestic animals. This prompted DHSS to notify public health officials, medical health care providers and veterinary professionals across the state.

Positive Human Case of E. coli 0157:H7 in Randolph County
October 13, 2004
The Randolph County Health Department announces that there has been a positive human case of E. coli 0157:H7 within the county, and urges all consumers, food workers, and restaurants to be certain that all ground meats are thoroughly cooked.

Confirmation of Pertusiss is Randolph County
June 15, 2004
Randolph County Health Department received confirmation from the state health lab of 2 cases of Pertussis (whooping cough).People having known contact with these individuals should contact their physician or the health department for more information and treatment options.  The health department strongly encourages parents to have their children vaccinated as soon as possible.

RABIES ALERT
On May 11, 2004 Janet Murray, R.E.H.S. Environmental Health Supervisor of the Randolph Co. Health Dept. announced that there has been a confirmed case of rabies found in a bat in Moberly.

CDC Recommends Temporary Suspension of Adoptions from Chinese Orphanage in Response to Measles Outbreak
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today (04/16/04) recommended a temporary suspension of adoption proceedings for children from the Zhuzhou Child Welfare Institute in the Hunan Province of China, which is experiencing an outbreak of measles.

Measles Among Adoptees from China: Potential Airline Exposure - CDC Health Update
On March 16, 2004, 11 families from the United States traveled as a group to China to adopt 12 children. The group remained together for about 10 days during the adoption process.  On April 6, 2004, Public Health - Seattle and King County, Washington reported a laboratory confirmed case of measles in a recently adopted child from among this group.
