West Nile Virus Update: July 29, 2002

This is an update on West Nile Virus Activity in Missouri from the DHSS, Section of Communicable Disease and Veterinary Public Health:

West Nile virus has been identified in the following birds submitted to the University of Missouri-Columbia, Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory by the following Health Departments:

St. Louis City: 4 Crow, submitted 7/17/02, 7/19/02 (2), &7/22/02 and 1 Blue Jay, submitted 7/22/02

St. Louis County: 7 crows, submitted-7/17/02 (2), 7/18/02, & 7/19/02 (4)

St. Charles County: Blue Jay, submitted 7/16/02

Columbia-Boone County: Blue Jay, submitted 7/10/02

St. Louis County Health Department also reported positive mosquito pools. This weekend, CDC performed WNV confirmatory tests on these mosquito pools. The positive mosquito pools were collected from traps in the St. Louis County areas of University City, Wellston, and Hillsdale.

This is the most current information that has been reported to this Section to date.

No Human Cases of West Nile Virus have been reported to date.
