Last month I talked bout foodborne diseases and conditions. Since we had another foodborne illness in our report this month I would like to re-emphasize the list of the BIG 4 Foodborne illnesses which need to be immediately reported to the Health Department. They are:

Hepatitis A
E-Coli 0157:H7
Shigellosis
Salmonellosis Typhi

If anyone is reported to have these diseases and they work in a food handling position, they must be excluded from food handling and are not allowed to be in a food handling establishment. These people must be treated and have further testing to show they are clear of the disease before they are allowed to return to a food handling position.

The report of flu and respiratory problems have increased this month with all reporting stations. I have had a laboratory confirmed case of Influenza A in the area. Influenza is a serious health problem and I encourage everyone to always get their flu vaccination each fall. Good prevention techniques prevail with influenza increased reports in the area. The best prevention against any disease is good hand washing.

I received a news release from the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services related to information of Vaccine Shortages. I felt this would be of concern to you/your organization and a copy is enclosed with this report. Currently, the Health Department does have vaccine available for immunizations of diptheria/tetanus/pertusis (DtaP) and chickenpox (Varicella). Tetanus (Td) immunizations are limited to only those persons who have received an injury. All other Td immunizations have been put on hold until such time that Td vaccine supplies becomes available. We have been told that future orders of vaccine for the Health Department may or may not be limited. For more information (or always a good place to find information on the Randolph County Health Department) check out our web site: http://www.randolphcountyhealth.org.

If you have any communicable disease which needs reporting or that you feel needs investigating, please feel free to contact me at the Randolph County Health Department.

Respectfully Submitted,

Donna Grisamore, R.N.
