Heat
Can Be A Killer!
The elderly and the chronically ill are vulnerable to the effects
of high temperatures.
Never leave infants and children in an unattended vehicle or other hot
environment!
Things you can do to stay cool
- Stay indoors in a cool room
- Keep activity to a minimum
- Take cool baths or showers
- Wear light weight, light colored clothing
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid alcohol
- Avoid hot foods and heavy meals
- Cool home with fans ( If the temperature is over
100 degrees F fans do not work for cooling the body. Seek shelter in
air conditioning.)
- If you must work outdoors start slowly and rest
frequently in a shady area.
Schedule outdoor activities before noon or in the evening
Warning Signs of Heat Related Illness
Mild
- Lack of energy lasting several days
- Loss of appetite lasting for several days
- Fainting
- Heat cramps
- Prickly heat
Serious
- Dizziness
- Rapid heart beat
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Throbbing headache
- Dry skin with no sweating
- Chest pain
- Great weakness
- Mental changes
- Breathing problems
- Vomiting
Seeking shelter from the heat
- Library
- Senior Citizen Centers
- Mall
- Movie theaters
- Supermarkets
*Certain medications can make you more prone to the effects of heat
related illnesses, check with your doctor or pharmacist for advice in
hot weather
