Possible Human Rabies Vaccine Recall

DHSS is notifying local public health agencies that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, and Aventis Pasteur will be sending out a notice recalling certain lots of Imovax human rabies vaccine. Detailed information regarding specific lots is expected to be released late today (Friday 4/2/04), possibly after normal business hours. Any information received will be posted on the HAN. LPHAs should check the HAN tonight and over the weekend for additional information.

It appears likely that some people who may have received vaccine from these lots will require additional vaccine doses. Therefore, LPHAs should be prepared to compare the recall notice against lots of Imovax they may have received since Fall 2003. It may also be necessary to send alerts to local providers and emergency rooms where people may have received pre- and post-exposure rabies vaccinations.
