The WIC office at the Randolph County Health Department has just received information on the new income guidelines for WIC eligibility. The new guidelines go into effect on April 1st, and are based on 185% of Federal Poverty Guidelines.

WIC is a supplemental food, nutrition education program for Women, Infants, and Children administered through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services with funding from the US Department of Agriculture. Over 1100 residents in Randolph County benefit from the WIC program. The food package, often referred to as a prescription for good health, provides nutritious foods with key nutrients needed during important periods of growth and development

Studies have shown that low-income children enrolled in WIC have a lower prevalence of anemia than those who are not enrolled. Additionally, four and five year-old children whose mothers participated in WIC during pregnancy have achieved better vocabulary test scores than children whose eligible mothers did not receive WIC benefits.

Pregnant women who enroll in WIC, have longer pregnancies leading to fewer premature births, experience fewer fetal and infant deaths and seek prenatal care earlier in pregnancy.
